Stocks in quantum computing firms sank on Thursday following a jump yesterday, as investors re-discovered interest.
Quantum Computing stocks such as Rigetti(RGTI), Quantum Computing(QUBT) and D-Wave QuantumQBTS all climbed on Tuesday after Microsoft’s (MSFT), first quantum chip was announced. These stocks surged once again as the market opened on Friday before paring gains. Rigetti stock was up about 1.1% in the morning, after jumping 9.9% on opening day. Quantum Computing shares and D-Wave Quantum were both up about 1.0% and 3.0%, respectively.
Alphabet, the company behind Google’s quantum chip Willow, launched it late last year. It claimed to be able to complete calculations orders of magnitude quicker than current computers.
Experts say that even with recent quantum computer breakthroughs it will be many years before they are useful. The company said its novel architecture "offers a clear path to fit a million qubits on a single chip," laying the groundwork for the development of a quantum computer that can do previously unimaginable things like "breaking down microplastics into harmless byproducts or inventing self-healing materials for construction, manufacturing or healthcare."
