Crypto industry alarmed as 7 million OpenSea email users’ leak resurfaces

The pseudonymous Chief Security Officer (CISO), 23pds at the blockchain security company SlowMist has expressed concern about possible phishing attempts targeting over seven million OpenSea customers whose email addresses were exposed in a breach that occurred on June 20, 2022.

23pds stated:

“Remember the attack on the OpenSea mail service provider in 202[2] that led to the leakage of emails? The leaked email addresses have now been fully publicized after multiple dissemination.”

The exposed data, according to 23pds includes email addresses for high-profile figures within the crypto sector, including prominent companies, key opinion leaders, and influencers.

This poses serious risks for privacy and security of assets in the crypto-sector. A screenshot shared by the CISO even revealed that Binance’s former CEO Changpeng Zhao’s email address was among the compromised data.

The data breach traces back to 2022, when an employee of OpenSea’s email vendor, Customer.io, improperly accessed and shared user email addresses with an unauthorized party.

OpenSea reassured users at the time that only subscribers to newsletters or emails were affected, and warned them against phishing.

Phishing Threats

The public disclosure of these emails by 23pds has increased concerns over phishing. They also added:

“Please be aware of the risks associated with phishing emails and other potential cyberattacks.”

SlowMist, a blockchain security company, advised users that they should adopt strong security measures to protect themselves from potential threats. This includes using unique, strong passwords in password managers and turning on two-factor verification (2FA) instead of SMS.

SlowMist is also known as:

“We also recommend that users use two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible, recommending an authenticator app over SMS-based 2FA, and said to keep device software updated.”

The warnings should not be surprising, as a Scam Sniffer Report revealed that crypto wallet drainers used phishing to cause an estimated $500,000,000 in losses by 2024. It was a 67% rise from incidents reported in 2023, and it affected more than 330,000 accounts.
