Institutional investors hold $27B in Bitcoin ETF shares, controlling over 25% of total AUM

Institutional investors held 25.4% of the assets under management (AUM) of spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as of Dec. 31 — totaling $26.8 billion.

The AUM held by the institutions also increased by 4,1% on a quarterly basis, with the amount totaling $78.8B jumping 69% at the close of the 4th quarter.

Lunde reports that the number of Bitcoin investors who have invested in ETFs has risen to 1,576, which is a jump of 37.4%. The yearly jump was also 68.2%.

The dominance of the IBIT

Lunde’s data also revealed that institutional interest in BlackRock’s IBIT grew over 4x in 2024.

At the end the the fourth quarter last year, institutions had reported IBIT shares worth $16 billion. This compares to less that $4 billion through hares in the first quarter. Between the third quarter and the fourth, the largest growth rate was seen.

Recently, Mubadala Investment Company, one of Abu Dhabi’s largest sovereign wealth funds, Reporting nearly $437 Million Bitcoin exposure via IBIT by the end of fourth quarter. 

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board increased its BTC investments by 110% via IBIT during the same time period. This investment surpassed $321,000,000. SWIB sold the shares of other Bitcoin ETFs such as Grayscale GBTC and, as at December 31, held only exposure to BlackRock IBIT.

Fidelity’s FBTC also expanded considerably, nearly 100% quarterly. Total institutional AUM is $5 billion.

As per Bold Report data, BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF has AUM is approximately $56.4 billion. The total AUM for all US-traded Bitcoin ETFs is $ 56,9 billion.
