Crypto-investor Will Harbone launched LongGame – a venture capital fund of $40 million dedicated to the advancement of longevity biotechnology – according to an announcement shared by CryptoSlate on Dec. 12.

Through investments in stem cell technology, gene editing and senolytics, the initiative hopes to extend healthy life expectancies over a period of three decades.

LongGame provides pre-seed, seed and other investments to early stage biotech companies with scalable technologies. In addition to funding, LongGame aims at bridging biotechnology with decentralized science.

The fund intends to incorporate tools, such as DAOs, to streamline drug development and promote patient-driven science. LongGame plans to allocate capital strategically over the next four-years, while supporting global scaling for its portfolio firms.

LongGame’s leadership team includes Chloe Northcott (formerly with Geometry), COO, as well as Sebastian A. Brunemeier (General Partner, Healthspan Capital). Dr. Manish Chamoli, the fund’s chief scientific officer, brings deep expertise in aging biology and longevity research from his tenure at the Buck Institute. The team’s mission will be advanced by collaborating with experts in various areas of medical science and biotechnology.

Harbone and his team envision leveraging blockchain innovation such as tokenizations, crowdfunding, or liquidity solutions, to fill funding gaps for longevity research. The mechanisms are designed to ensure that life-extending treatments can be accessed by a wide range of people, rather than only the rich.

He explained:

“Our goal is to fund therapies that do more than just extend life; we’re looking for solutions that radically expand the healthy human lifespan—by 30 years or more. We’re tackling the root causes of aging, not just the symptoms, and we want to ensure that these life-extending therapies are accessible to the masses, not just the wealthy.”

Harborne thinks that innovation in longevity can have a disruptive effect on global industries just like how crypto changed traditional finance.

This move by the fund is also in line with an overall trend where crypto leaders are moving into the longevity sector. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong founded NewLimit in 2014, which raised $40M to develop age-related therapies.
