Meta, the social media giant, is switching to a user driven fact checking program. “Community Notes”, system according to an announcement made on Jan. 7.
The move is similar to the one taken by X, formerly Twitter, whereby users identify potentially misleading content and give context.
Add the platform:
“We think this could be a better way of achieving our original intention of providing people with information about what they’re seeing – and one that’s less prone to bias.”
Notes for Community Members
According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the change aims to simplify the company’s complex content moderation policies, which have previously led to excessive censorship and errors.
Meta hopes that by empowering diverse users with the ability to influence contextual information it can address concerns about bias while maintaining a flow of free ideas on its various platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Threads, etc.
Zuckerberg emphasized that the shift aligns with Meta’s broader goal of returning to its roots as a hub for free expression.
Meta, in addition to rolling-out Community Notes and restoring the visibility of such content, plans to reverse earlier decisions downplaying it. Restrictions on controversial topics, such as gender and immigration, will be loosen to encourage broader debate.
Meta’s filters will be adjusted to give priority to severe policy violations such as child abuse, terrorism, drug trafficking and fraud. The company is also moving its team of content reviewers from California to Texas in order to increase trust.
Meta cryptocurrency community is backed by the cryptocommunity
The crypto community has largely supported Meta’s pivot toward decentralized content moderation.
Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong described this move as “huge,”He noted that it could enhance fairness and transparency. He said:
“Huge – nature is healing.”
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, had also previously drawn parallels between Community Notes (the notes that people leave in their communities) and blockchain technology.
Both systems are based on decentralization and transparency. They also reflect the values of the crypto-ecosystem.
