Bloomberg News on Jan. 30 reported that the parents of Sam Bankman Fried (SBF), citing someone familiar with this matter, are exploring avenues for obtaining a presidential pardon.
Stanford Law School professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried have reportedly engaged in discussions with lawyers and individuals within Trump’s orbit in recent weeks.
It is not clear if the couple has directly contacted the White House. However, they appear to be trying to obtain clemency on behalf of their 32-year old son who received a sentence to 25 years for fraud.
SBF’s parents and the White House declined to comment. SBF has filed an appeal to overturn his 2023 conviction for the collapse of FTX. The lawyer who represents him did not respond immediately to queries.
Pardon Run
Trump’s swift use of the presidential pardon, including the recent commutation of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht’s life sentence, has sparked a surge in requests from high-profile white-collar criminals.
Jeffrey Grant is a lawyer who advises white-collar offenders. He has received 100 questions about pardons.
He said:
“We have been hearing from people in prison, from people recently sentenced who haven’t yet reported to the Bureau of Prisons, from people who have just been indicted. They are looking for somebody who knows somebody.”
SBF, however, does not enjoy the same widespread support as Ulbricht. He has argued his sentence of 25 years is too harsh, especially since many FTX clients have recovered the majority of their funds.
Ryan Salame is another former FTX executive who has expressed an interest in a pardon by the president. He was sentenced to seven years.
Sam Mangel is a prison consultant with a background in white collar work. He has worked previously on clemency applications for Trump’s allies Steve Bannon, Peter Navarro and others.
The official guidance he received was that cases involving sex crime, violent crimes and cases of illegal immigration would not be taken into consideration.
