Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s latest blog post reflects on the progress of decentralized and democratic differential defensive acceleration, or d/acc — one year after its introduction.
Buterin called for caution as AI technology is developed, and urged the use of defensive technologies to empower people without depending on authorities.
The concept of D/ACC has been adopted by many technology companies. It is helping to advance open-source vaccinations, prediction markets and proofs that digital identities are based on zero knowledge.
In early 2024 the d/acc philosophical system was proposed. This philosophy promotes technological advancement with more emphasis placed on defensive capabilities than offensive ones. This concept promotes decentralization as well as democratization in order to prevent elite groups and governments from monopolizing power.
Since the beginning, public dialogue and collaboration have helped d/acc evolve. The first d/acc conference took place in October. “d/acc Discovery Day”Devcon brought experts together from diverse areas, such as neurotechnology, biosecurity and information security. The event highlighted the cross-disciplinary nature of technologies that aim to strengthen societal resilience, without depending on central authority.
Buterin wrote the following:
“People working on these technologies are increasingly aware of each other’s work, creating a more cohesive movement. The same values that drive Ethereum and decentralized finance can be applied to biotechnology, cybersecurity, and beyond.”
The movement’s real-world impact has been seen in the development of verifiable open-source vaccines and enhanced air filtration systems, which have contributed to public health improvements. D/ACC’s potential to combat pandemics is also demonstrated through tools such as the pocket air test, which can detect viruses in airborne form by updating software.
The risks of artificial intelligence are a central concern for d/acc. The initiative supports technologies that improve defense mechanisms and decentralize control. They challenge the belief that AI risk management can only be managed by centralized oversight.
Buterin, according to:
“In a world where AI development accelerates rapidly, decentralizing defense reduces the likelihood of catastrophic scenarios driven by unchecked technological advancement. We need tools that empower individuals and communities to protect themselves without relying on centralized powers.”
The d/acc industry has also been influenced by crypto technologies. As informational tools, prediction markets built on Blockchain platforms have become popular. Zero-knowledgeproofs and homomorphic cryptography have also found application in the security of sensitive data.
Looking ahead, d/acc’s proponents envision expanding public goods funding to support decentralized defense technologies. It aims to support projects which provide benefits for all, yet lack profit-making models.
“Public goods funding is crucial for ensuring that essential technologies remain open and accessible. As we face challenges like AI safety and biosecurity, decentralized funding models will play a key role in fostering innovation.”
D/acc is now in its second year. Its advocates continue to be optimistic about the potential of d/acc’s ability to create a world where technological advancement enhances safety collectively and protects individual rights.
