While exploring the various AI and memecoin projects that have sprung up over the past month, I found that many — though not all — took technologies or ideas that are already widespread and tried attaching a token element. It’s good news for those who have bought memecoins, but the best ideas will take some time.
My experience has shown that most AI-crypto projects are centered around the creation of an AI chatbot and a memecoin, with the idea being that AI bots which attract more attention can generate more investment. Some AI bots have been programmed to not talk about money. Others are happy to give investment advice. One memecoin bot advised me to invest in VGX – the native token of Voyager – the now-bankrupt crypto-exchange.

(Zerebro has also released a melodic rap song created by AI, which is actually quite good, despite it not being a new technology.)
The more projects you try out, the more crypto’s AI agent mania feels contrived—like mad libs for tech buzzwords with way-too-high market caps. I came across a Warpcast topic where an AI asked another AI to design a memecoin that was themed around the greatness of AI. It has a market cap over $19m. Virtuals Protocol ripped the pump.fun page and stuffed it full of AI agents.
If AI agents are to be used in crypto, they will likely generate more interesting uses cases further down the line. Ai16z is one project that I will be following. It plans to create an AI version (and others) of Marc Andreessen, the founder of a16z. “partners”) autonomously invest in memecoins based on advice from a DAO.
Memecoins may not encourage long-term planning, and investors might find it difficult to remain patient. ai16z already faces backlash following a botched AI agent token launch that resulted in wild price swings.
