Jim Lee has left the Internal Revenue Service after nearly 30 years. He will now be the global head of Capacity Building at Chainalysis, a blockchain-based research company.

Lee has been the IRS Criminal Investigation Director since most recently.

“Crypto is the future of finance, which also means it’s the future of crime,” Read the header of Lee’s introduction blurb.

Lee, who led IRS-CI at the time, helped to bring down dark-web marketplace Hydra. He also seized cryptocurrency that was being used to fund Hamas, and helped to take down Welcome to Video – a child-exploitation website based on crypto.

“[B]y equipping law enforcement agencies with the best-in-class tools and data to fight this activity, we can ensure that the crypto ecosystem remains as safe as possible, so that people around the world can realize its many benefits without fear of being targeted by criminals,” Lee added.

Initial focus of his role is to assist international agencies in combating crypto-crime.

When the IRS last appeared in news about crypto hires, it was for the opposite reason: To improve the IRS’s crypto tax compliance capability.

Blockworks had previously reported that Lee told Blockworks at the end of the last year the IRS was bringing more cases related to crypto tax evasion.
