Devnet, testnet, mainnet: Ethereum’s next upgrade progresses — slowly

Say hello to Holešky, a new Ethereum testnet that successfully went live today after a configuration problem prevented the network from launching two weeks ago on the 1-year anniversary of the Merge.

Holešky is intended to replace Ethereum’s Goerli testnet — Ethereum’s validator and staking-focused testnet — which will be retired in 2024.

Barnabas Buza, an Ethereum Foundation software engineer, says that the minor bug which was reported during today’s call of all core-developers, and affected some Prysm Ethereum client, did not derail the launch. Busa reported that the number of validators has increased in recent hours, and is expected to hit 90% on Friday.

Goerli will still be used to upgrade Dencun, which includes EIP-4844 and is on the way to a mainnet release.

But before that step, the upgrade has been running a gauntlet of developer networks — or devnets.

Devnet-9 is set to debut in the near future, and core developers have discussed its launch. “Friday or early next week” Tim Beiko, project coordinator. The start date has been delayed slightly from that originally planned for Sept. 27, according to the last developer’s call.

Dencun’s upgrade originally targeted a hard-fork date during the fourth quarter this year. A hard fork in 2023 is unlikely due to Devnets’ slower progress than anticipated.

Busa said to his co-workers on the call: “we probably need a Devnet 10 too,” It’s not as bad as you might think “a shorter-lived Devnet.”

It is now the goal to launch the testnet prior to Devconnect, which takes place in Istanbul mid-November.

If everything goes according to plan, mainnet might be available as soon as 2024.
