Ethereum developers mark milestone before Devcon

This all began with a simple understatement “woo-hoo” And a laugh. It was the 200th Ethereum All Core Devs (ACD), a landmark meeting.

Christine Kim from Galaxy noted this on X. “[W]hat’s cool about these calls is that through the years they’ve remained open, transparent and accessible for anyone to join and listen in on. [A]lso, devs still rely on these calls to act as a critical forcing function for making key governance decisions about [E]thereum.”

The usual discussion took place around the key update for testing networks in preparation for Pectra’s upcoming upgrade.

Devcon, Thailand’s largest Ethereum conference and annual event, will begin next week.

Highlight of the conference call was the creation of Mekong, an interim devnet to support Devcon Hackathons. Mekong, a short-term devnet built on Devnet 4 specs, is live now, providing developers with a focussed environment to innovate ahead of Ethereum’s upcoming changes.

“Mekong is meant to be a playground for wallet developers to experiment with UX changes and for stakers to gain confidence in the upcoming changes,” A blog posting announcing a testnet.

Devnet 4 remains available to developers for additional testing for the next couple of weeks. This will allow them the opportunity to experiment with the protocol as it evolves.

Discussions included recent updates to EIPs 7002 and 7521, which affect core functionality. These contracts have been modified to make them more user-friendly, especially by preventing accidental overpayments. The contracts are under audit at the moment, but developers have been asked to look over these updates asynchronously.

Devs further explored ways to streamline testing by isolating specific parts of the fork — specifically EOF and PeerDAS — for independent activation. Nethermind’s “chainspec” The configuration option allows teams to test individual EIPs by enabling fine-grained EIP control. This approach is complex, and some teams would prefer Geth’s simple fork-activation model.

Some developers have noted that a finely-grained approach could result in unpredictable interactions, if it is not carefully managed.

The call also focused on the growing data footprint of Ethereum and methods to manage historical data efficiently. EIP-7801 — aka eth/70 or Sharded Blocks Protocol — was proposed as a short-term solution to reduce nodes’ storage requirements. It would reduce the amount of data until Portal becomes fully integrated. Some teams prefer a standard approach for the storage of history, while others favor client-specific approaches.

EIP-7610, which aims to address certain edge-cases in contract deployment, was also mentioned in the conversation. Despite the fact that this proposal is nearing completion, some clients have reported difficulties in its implementation. A new design will be presented soon.

Devcon is a unique opportunity for core developers from around the world to meet in person, and work out issues that have not been resolved. Ethereum developers continue to make progress on several fronts, including optimizing infrastructure and meeting the scaling needs of dapps.
