Crypto is the creature of extremes. You only need to look at the current major stories.
Memecoins and AI agents are virtually virtual. DePIN derives its value proposition almost entirely from physical hardware networks. In real life.
So, you can’t fault Helium — the decentralized wireless carrier powered by Solana — for teaming up with DAWN to expand both their networks, together.
They have formed a joint venture to enable Helium hotspots to offer DAWN internet and vice-versa. “the world’s first fully decentralized last-mile internet solution.”
DAWN, like Helium, is trying to revolutionize the centralized telecoms industry. It wants to allow regular users to own their infrastructure, and to be rewarded with crypto in exchange for offering wireless broadband services to others.
“The conversation started with a strong alignment on the mission of decentralizing internet access,” Helium’s spokesperson informed me. “We’re moving toward making connectivity owned by the many and accessible to everyone.”
A press release states that this will result in the Helium Network automatically growing by 8,000 servers that currently serve the DAWN Ecosystem.
Helium Foundation Dashboard shows more than 25,000 active mobile hotspots since April of last year.
According to the spokesperson, there is no investment or equity deal in this partnership. It all still suggests that there is a convergence in the DePIN area.
Like how GPUs and ASIC mining rigs can be used to mine a number of different cryptocurrencies — switching between them based on profitability — we could be headed for a world where DePIN devices in our homes can be pointed to all sorts of different use cases depending on demand.
The household could earn more money without having to incur the high overheads associated with proof-of work mining. However, the amount would depend on the token price and other factors.
Helium and Dawn would eventually have been rivals if the partnership hadn’t been formed. It’s not so much a competition anymore.
Elon Musk’s Starlink, the most powerful competitor of Helium’s Dawn partnership outside traditional carriers.
“Starlink is disrupting the connectivity industry in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago,” Helium’s spokesperson confirmed this. “Several Helium deployments use Starlink as an internet backhaul in the US and Mexico.”
Team members have also created a kit of connectivity that uses Starlink in conjunction with Helium Hotspots to provide better service for phones when they are not covered by cell towers.
Helium’s partnership with Dawn makes perfect sense in any event, especially since it is likely that the latter will at some point airdrop a token for early adopters.
When it comes to motivating people to put physical devices into their home, two flywheel tokens should be more effective than just one.
