Kraken now has Ink.

Kraken today announced that it plans to launch Ink – its own Ethereum Layer-2 network – on the mainnet by early 2025.

Ink will use Optimism’s OP Stack and be part of Optimism’s constellation of Blockchains, dubbed Superchain.

According to L2Beat, the OP Stack has about 43 active chains. Soneium, Uniswap Unichain and Sony Soneium are upcoming layers-2 chains.

According to a Blockworks press release, Kraken has opted into the Optimism Superchain. It will share a portion of its revenue from sequencers with Optimism.

Coinbase’s Base layer-2, for instance, shares 2.5% – 15% of its sequencer revenue with the Optimism treasury. Since Base’s October 2023 launch, Optimism received about 2566 ETH from Base in the form of sequencer revenue.

Andrew Koller said the following about Ink’s launch: “A [layer-2] is only as good as the value it brings to users, and that value is created by a thriving ecosystem of developers.”

Kraken is promoting the Ink blockchain as being DeFi-centric. The chain will offer block speeds of just one second from its day-one launch. Sub-second times are planned in future.

Ink is slated to launch the testnet within 17 days. Testnet launches will include AMAs (Ask Me Anything), live demos, and contests aimed at developers.

Kraken, founded in 2011 by Jesse Powell and with over 10,000,000 users spread across more than 180 countries is today one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges. Kraken, according to Coinmarketcap rankings is currently the world’s sixth-largest crypto exchange.
