MetaMask announced Thursday that it has changed its logo to a fox and made major improvements to its cryptocurrency wallet.
Dan Finlay, MetaMask’s co-founder and CEO gave me the lowdown on the changes that are coming to the traditional crypto wallet.
“It almost feels like closing Chapter Two on wallets,” Finlay said.
MetaMask’s wallet will be changed by Ethereum’s Pectra fork so you’ll have to sign less frequently. It could also be an improvement in terms of security and ease-of-use.
The current way wallets work can be bad for security too — Finlay said a “blind sign” The recent Bybit hack was enabled by an incident.
“They were asked to sign a hash just blindly. And they did it. That’s just so deeply, fundamentally broken,” I hear him.
This update will allow you to remove permissions directly from your wallet. They’re also going to abstract away networks and gas to make using MetaMask feel easier — no more typing in strange codes to add blockchains to your wallet.
“Users are still signing stuff they don’t understand. And if we want to make this like the rails of an actual functional economy, people need to actually get what they’re doing, and it has to be like at the deepest level,” Finlay added.

The wallet will also allow swaps that include gas, which means you won’t need to worry about getting gas tokens to the wallet in order to make the exchange. MetaMask will allow users to pay their gas fees with any tokens they have next month to streamline transactions.
MetaMask profiles can be synced with multiple recovery words, regardless of the web browser you are using.
All tokens, including those on chains, will be displayed in the wallet page, similar to Coinbase Wallet. All your crypto should be in one location. It will also remove all the clutter and spam tokens.
“We’re in the, like, spam filtering, trying to filter sewage era of blockchain,” Finlay said. “I hope that people are going to notice like, hey, this, this actually works better.”
MetaMask has launched a Mastercard credit card powered by Mastercard that allows you to link your MetaMask wallet for self-custody and use that cryptocurrency.

Full Bitcoin and Solana support is coming to the MetaMask wallet, too — in a more seamless way than the current third-party enabled option — so your MetaMask can finally feel more like the be-all, end-all crypto wallet of your dreams.
Let’s be honest. I own a MetaMask hardware wallet as well as a Coinbase wallet. I also have a Phantom wallet and Ronin wallet. That’s quite a bit. Too much. It’s too much. Ease-of-use wins.
MetaMask is a great tool, but this new update might make me reconsider it.
