Noble XYZ – a Cosmos based general asset issuance network – has halted its integration with Interchain Security because of slashing fears.
Interchain Security — also known as Replicated Security — allows the Cosmos Hub to run multiple blockchains in parallel, all while using the same security attributes.
The ATOMs can be used by validators to protect different apps chains. However, if a validator is dishonest, he or she will either face disciplinary action, “slashed.”
Interchain Security initially implemented a slashing policy that penalized validators for any wrongdoing. Blockworks Research analyst David Rodriguez explains that the slashing was implemented through governance.
The new strategy requires that consumer chains send an e-mail to consumers. “slashing packet” Cosmos Hub, and ATOM Community Governance will have the ability to vote whether or not a validator is to be removed.
The decision was taken so validators wouldn’t be punished immediately if a fault code appeared in a chain that had just been created.
“Replicated Security is still nascent tech and as a security precaution, it makes sense to go the safer route via governance-gated slashing,” Rodriguez said.
Noble XYZ launched as a “proof of authority” Use a validator that you trust to validate your chain.
“The Proof of Authority model provides real economic cost to faulty validator behavior and thus provides economic security to the network that can be computed in real-time based on past and projected fees,” The company stated on its GitHub Page.
Noble XYZ stated that it will continue to monitor Interchain Security development and make sure it is up-to-date with the latest standards.
“This is a big blow to the Hub’s Replicated Security go-to-market (GTM) strategy,” Rodriguez said. “Noble would’ve aligned ATOM value accrual with the growth of the Interchain.”
Although this may be the case, the plans are still just preliminary. Once automated slashing has been incorporated into Replicated security, it is hoped Noble will decide that they want to align themselves with Hub.
