Pectra’s progress: gas refunds, audits, and Ethereum leadership discussion

Ethereum developers focused their first ACD of the new year, following the holidays on closing up any loose ends regarding the hard fork Pectra.

Devnet 5 went live just before the conference call. It may be its last version. [network implemented] Before moving onto the testnet phase which is scheduled to begin tentatively in early February. Pectra contracts have undergone bytecode reviews, and all the changes are already in place. In two weeks, a follow-up on the audit findings will be presented.

The discussion was largely centered on the refinement of gas refund mechanisms. EIP-7623 which clarifies the gas refund handling was successfully combined, solving issues regarding the application of refunds. Pectra was able to fix a long-standing issue, aligning transaction gas prices with anticipated outcomes.

EIP-7840 is another important feature, as it pertains to updates of base fees in Ethereum’s future. Marek Moraczyński from the Nethermind team provided context for a proposal aiming to streamline configuration and bring consistency to Ethereum, enhancing network efficiency.

Ethereum is focusing on scaling by identifying low-hanging fruits. However, there are other improvements that have been gaining developer support. The first, relating to BLS gas precompilation costs under EIP-2537 aims to align the gas constants of prior assumptions. Radek Zagórowicz from the Ipsilon team explained that “the easiest fix to the spec is…correcting the constant so it follows their previous assumptions.” The adjustment aligns the gas cost with Ethereum’s goal for efficient scaling.

On the Holesky testnet, gas limitations were debated, and a suggestion was made to raise them relative to mainnet for testing. The gas limit, for example, would rise to 60 millions after the Pectra branch and then increase progressively with every fork.

Who is the best person to lead the EF?

Danny Ryan, a leading candidate to head the Ethereum foundation (EF), is also gaining support from the Ethereum community outside the daily development. The technical skills he displayed during Ethereum’s switch to Proof-of-Stake as well as the community-driven nature of his approach have earned him respect in this space.

Aya miyaguchi, the executive director of the EF since 2018, has faced a slew calls from X to find a new leader, with many in support of Ryan.

Anton Cheng tells his story about how Ryan has inspired him to be more active in 2019. “[showing him] the path to Ethereum,” The open-source movement is a cause that I am passionate about. A prominent DCinvestor, who also used a pseudonym, praised Ryan for his leadership skills, citing his capacity to navigate through uncertainties and his technical knowledge of Ethereum as two important qualities in navigating Ethereum’s scaling issues.

Ryan left the EF last September and has been interested in taking on the role of EF. In an effort to avoid any uncivility, he sounded a diplomat note about X:

“Regardless of the future of Ethereum — whether with or without me in any capacity — I want to state publicly and very clearly that I have nothing but respect and praise for [Miyagotchi’s] leadership and friendship,” Ryan writes.
