Taproot Wizards wants to bring back an idea that was first used by Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto in the early days.

Satoshi Nakamoto disabled several opcodes in 2010 due to concerns over potential vulnerabilities that could affect the network. Satoshi was concerned that it could be used for a DoS attack.
Udi Worthheimer, of Taproot Wizards which is a promoter for Ordinals, believes it’s time to reinstate this particular Opcode.
“It’s not a full-blown smart contracting language like on Ethereum or Solana, but it does enable a lot of functionality that we couldn’t do before,” Wertheimer spoke to Blockworks and gave the examples of decentralized trading systems and bridge assets.
Bitcoin, unlike Ethereum, was deliberately limited in its programmability to make it simpler and more secure.
Wertheimer stated that the OP_CAT code can be reactivated by a simple code change. It only takes around 10 lines to do so.
Bitcoin has a reputation for being difficult to modify. This is due to the slow-moving consensus process between a handful of developers, who then update the software.
One advantage of OP_CAT, like another recent proposal to expand Bitcoin’s utility, BitVM, is that it would not require a hard fork — the most contentious type of change. OP_CAT requires only a’soft fork’, which involves less coordination between stakeholders. In 2021 the last occurred with Taproot being activated, which enabled Ordinals.
“[OP_CAT] actually enables bridging which — I think even [BitVM proponent] Robin Linus would agree — without some sort of soft fork, BitVM in practice would be difficult to use,” Wertheimer stated.
BitVM is not necessarily a fork. However, Wertheimer says that Linus has OP_CAT as he believes it will make his goals easier.
Some Bitcoin Forks such as Bitcoin Cash already have enabled OP_CAT. In May 2018, developers brought the opcode back as part of an effort to improve the scripting capabilities of Bitcoin Cash.
Some of the uses of OP_CAT in Bitcoin Cash involve the creation and management of tokens, payment channels, and methods for embedding and retrieving data on the blockchain.
This opcode also works on Blockstream Liquid’s sidechain, where decentralized token trading is enabled.
