Crypto’s viral new app isn’t new.
Clout, a social project based in Solana, saw its downloads soar after it launched an iPhone application that allows users to buy tokenized social media profiles. This idea is similar to that of the 2023 viral app friend.tech. BitClout was a Crypto-Twitter tokenization application which became viral in 2021. Friend.tech’s founding team has left the platform. BitClout’s founder is currently being charged by DOJ and SEC with fraud.
Clout doesn’t lean away from the forefathers. The project shared a meme today that parodied Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker from The Social Network. “Drop the ‘Bit.’ Just ‘Clout.’ It’s cleaner.”
“Integrity and healthy tokenomics!” Clout’s founder Ben Pasternak replied when I asked what makes his app different.
Clout ranked #34 in the App Store’s Finance Chart at the time this article was written. It’s so crowded that I can’t even make a purchase. Clout isn’t the only SocialFi-branded app that has Solana’s attention.
Tribe.run — which is still in invite-only mode — has also seen some momentum for a tokenized X profile app that creates token-gated group chats called tribes. After grabbing an invite, I have enjoyed the nostalgic Windows 98 style design of this app. Tribe includes an airdrop function that allowed me to share some tokens with my group members. Solana’s zero-knowledge compressing enables this feature.
Bill Zheng, the founder of Tribe, told me that friend.tech had failed because it was a bad app. “fundamental flaw” Creators were not motivated to remain engaged. Tribe employs a subscription model where tribe members must pay a certain amount of SOL to stay in the group chat — giving the tribe creators a reason to stick around.
Outside of Solana, Kaito AI has seen success with its Yaps platform that doles out points for users who are active — or who yap a lot, in internet parlance — on Crypto Twitter.
Elon Musk’s Social Media Platform is resilient, and SocialFi’s resilience shows that. X will remain the centre of the crypto online world until then, crypto social applications will test out different ways to monetize Crypto Twitter.
