Some months ago I was tempted to click on solanaroadmap.com. This website simply said “increase bandwidth reduce latency” — Solana’s preferred rallying cry of late. It took me several days to check out the 2025 road map put out by Anza. Anza is the developer’s shop that spun off from Solana Labs.
The roadmap wasn’t a joke. This roadmap did not troll. It was a tease of Anza’s plan to double Solana Blockspace in the coming year. Anza continues to make small, but important changes to Solana code as Solana gets ready to roll out the Firedancer high-performance client.
Anza develops Solana’s Agave client — the original validator software put out by Solana Labs — and works on a number of other engineering problems, similarly to how blockchain “labs” Entities tend to function. Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz frequently mentions on the Lightspeed podcast that ironing out a number of small inefficiencies in Solana’s codebase could greatly improve the network’s already-industry-leading performance. Anza’s roadmap for 2025 expresses similar sentiments.
“Complex systems are not optimized by one magic fix but rather the accumulation of thousands of micro-advancements,” Brennan Watt, Vice president of core engineering at Anza, wrote in a post.
These micro-advances include the improvement of Agave’s scheduler; scaling Turbine, Solana’s block propagation algorithm and changing to a more secure hashing algorithms.
By increasing Solana’s block limitation, you can get the best airtime from the improvement in your piece. Solana’s blocks are currently limited to up 48 million computing units. Watt said that the block limitation limits Solana’s data bandwidth.
Anza has decided to start with a small increase in the block size, going from 48 to 50 millions CUs.
The read layer is one part of the Solana Network that may struggle to cope with the higher block limit. This piece must convert blockchain data into a form that can be read by programs.
It is widely believed that the question of 2025 will concern how to read. Head of Product at the Solana Foundation, said Solana’s Read Layer in a new kind of roadmap “needs an overhaul” Improvements are coming this year, as teased by the company.
