Crypto is becoming more popular. From The Met’s storied galleries to the creation of a whole new generation of Hollywood classics, it has made a big impact. Two novel projects — The Met’s Art Links and Incention’s Emergence — hint at how crypto is evolving audience engagement with art and narrative.
Art Links is the first experience powered by blockchain that The Metropolitan Museum of Art has created in New York to help gamify history of art. The Met Collection is explored through this interactive game that invites the player to identify connections between works of art. Art Links awards players NFT badges as well as real-world benefits, like private museum tours or exhibition catalogues. The experience, built on Base, offers in-game crypto purchases, along with free NFTs.
Projects that fall under the Met’s scope are those which have been funded by “Phigital” category — blending digital and physical experiences in a bid to modernize the museum-going experience. Included in the category is a new digital and physical experience that aims to modernize museum-going. “Web3” As one of the four types of connections in game shows “how artists across time have engaged with core concepts underpinning the blockchain, such as randomization, security and ledgers,” The developer TRLab.
Art Links had nearly 20,000 players in its first week. Over 1,600 non-winning tickets were claimed. Each Thursday, at 12:01am ET during the next three-month period, a new game will be released.
Emergence: Collaboration in storytelling
Incention’s Story Protocol and The Met’s Gamification of Art Appreciation are both looking to redefine the franchise story. Their new sci-fi project, Emergence — developed with The Dark Knight and Foundation creator David S. Goyer — offers a blockchain-powered platform where fans and creators can co-develop expansive narrative universes.
The project uses Story’s blockchain, which recently launched a developer mainnet, to ensure that all contributions — such as characters, worlds and plotlines — are recognized and compensated via smart contracts.
Atlas, Incention’s AI-copilot, also supports the process of generating ideas, visual assets, and narratives. It is a goal to enable intellectual property owners to collaborate on storytelling, while still maintaining a clear revenue sharing model and licensing. Does this represent yet another example of AI-driven productivity that simplifies Hollywood’s digital content creation relationship? AI contributions will they dilute originality or emotional depth of human writers?
Either way, powerhouse institutions like The Met and Hollywood embracing these tools is indicative of where we’re headed — the lines between creator, audience and collector will continue to blur.
Crypto has mainly financial applications, but the use of distributed ledgers can be used to unlock novel experiences, and even shape the culture, in the digital age.
