Open Network – aka TON – made a splash in the crypto world with Telegram integrations and games, such as NOTcoin. This coin has had over $1 billion worth of volume traded ever since it was launched.
A TON page shows over 570 apps related to gaming, which would be a massive number in any chain. But are the games on TON any good — and where does the TON ecosystem go from here?
“It’s been a hell of a ride,” Ivan Gusev tells me that he is head of fun for the TON NFT market Getgems.
Games that were launched in 2024 on TON are still at an early stage. Jack Booth, co-founder of TON Society, an organization that contributes to TON, tells me he believes the games that release in 2025 and beyond will be evolved — hopefully better — versions of what we’re seeing now.
Similarly, the tokens sent via Telegram or TON are not very durable. The games tend to be very basic, with little or no use of technology. “tap-to-earn,” Spin the roulette wheel or use other methods to make money.
“The sustainable token model is something that I think these games will start to implement,” Booth noted that, in his opinion, the crypto industry has focused too heavily on price speculation.
Telegram’s NFTs can be used to buy Telegram profile stickers, profiles decals or other items.
Booth claimed that Telegram had begun to use TON without notifying TON’s builders. Telegram has a symbiotic, but disjointed relationship with TON because it doesn’t inform them of what they’re going to do.
Booth and Gusev told me both that TONs like them have “zero relationship” Telegram is the best way to communicate with your loved ones.
“We don’t know Telegram’s plans. I’m pretty sure Pavel doesn’t know Telegram’s plans,” Gusev says to me smiling, in reference to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov. “They operate in chaos.”
Despite this chaos, TON creators like Booth Gusev and Gusev believe that keeping TON linked to Telegram would be the best decision.
This is primarily because Telegram already has so many users — billions, in fact, many of whom like crypto. Crypto’s greatest challenge is probably acquiring and growing users.
Booth thinks that the Telegram Wallet will become more available in 2025, if US regulatory changes are favorable. “very soon.”
