The Web3 games will look very different if there is a huge revival. Perhaps that is for the better.
Kate Irwin from The Drop said that there has been a trend away more traditional games. “hidden” The crypto element is optional and is more an acknowledgement that Web3 games’ primary audiences are degens.
“Instead of trying to convert the Fortnite gamers of the world, they’re now trying to convert the non-gamers who are just crypto traders, and convince them to play a game that is basically just trading with a with a gaming layer on top that’s kind of a thin veneer in a lot of these titles,” Irwin explained.
Crypto is not popular with traditional gamers. It’s not like they are buying games containing NFT or other elements. Why continue to try to appeal to an uninterested audience?
In The Drop’s official first newsletter, Irwin featured one of these projects that is making the change: THNDR. The Drop is switching to a more casino-styled game, rather than focussing on projects that allow players to earn money.
Although the overall change isn’t shocking, it may be because of changes in the industry. “overestimated” Off the Grid and its potential will be insufficient to attract an audience who are still hesitant about crypto. After all, it’s only been a few years since FTX’s collapse and while we — the folks who either stayed or joined post-FTX — have moved on, it’s understandable that non-crypto folks just don’t get it yet.
