- Google parent Alphabet's shares rose more than 5% Tuesday after the company unveiled a "breakthrough" quantum computing chip called Willow.
- Google stated that Willow is able to complete calculations in a matter of minutes, which would have taken supercomputers ten septillion years.
- The chip is part of Google's roadmap toward a quantum computer with applications in drug discovery, fusion energy, battery design, and more, CEO Sundar Pichai said.
Google’s parent Alphabet shares (GOOGL) rose to the highest level they have reached since July, after it unveiled Willow. Willow is a quantum computer chip which can do calculations that take supercomputers today 10 septillion years.
Hartmut Neeven, Google Quantum AI’s founder and leader, pointed out in a Monday blog that Willow can reduce errors by an exponential amount as it increases the number of qubits – quantum computing’s units for information computation. (A septillion, by the way, is a 1 followed by 24 zeroes—15 more than are in a billion.)
Neven explained that quantum chips produce more errors when more qubits have been used.
Willow Reaches the second of six Google Quantum Milestones
The phenomenon known as “quantum error correction,” This is the second milestone in Google’s roadmap for quantum computing, culminating with a “large, error-corrected quantum computer.”
“We see Willow as an important step in our journey to build a useful quantum computer with practical applications in areas like drug discovery, fusion energy, battery design + more,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai stated on X.
Alphabet shares closed at $186.53 on Tuesday, up over 5%. They are now up by more than 30% for the year.
