American Airlines requested a short nationwide stop by the Federal Aviation Administration on the Eve of Christmas, which is one of busiest days for travel.

"A technical issue is affecting American flights this morning," American Airlines said, according to reports. "Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."

The holiday travel season is expected to be a busy one for Americans. The American Automobile Association (AAA) earlier this month estimated that more than 119 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between Dec. 1 and New Year's Day, topping a record set in 2019. AAA estimated that 7.8 millions of these people would fly.

According to National Weather Service map published on Tuesday, forecasters expect snow and rain through Wednesday morning in parts of New England and the Northeast, as well as in other areas of the U.S., while thunderstorms are expected in California, and in some Gulf of Mexico states.

About an hour prior to the Tuesday opening bell, American stocks were up less than 1%. This year, they are up by about 25%.
