Mix ‘n’ Match soda dispensers are your thing? You can scramble up your condiments too

It’s possible that the simple condiment used in fast food will soon be given a more sophisticated role.

Long pushed to the periphery of burger joints, sauces—often found in bulky tubs with pump handles or boxes of packets stashed behind the check-out counter—may soon come to a futuristic dispenser near you.

Heinz Remix is one of the few machines available that allow diners to create their own condiments using 200 different sauce blends.

Kraft Heinz Foods has announced that Heinz Remix machines will be installed in 15 places, including BurgerFi franchises in Florida as well as the University of Florida Jacksonville Jaguars Stadium. Zach Vineyard said that they want to evaluate the performance of the machine at each outpost before expanding the commercial launch.

This dispenser is based on the Coca-Cola (KO) Freestyle Machine, which allows people to mix drinks from different sodas and fruit juices. In the case of the condiments, customers choose from four bases—BBQ, ketchup, mayo and ranch—on a digital screen, infuse the sauce with one or two flavor enhancers; and place a plastic container in the belly of the machine.

Heinz Remix rotates the container in circles, flashes an orange light, and releases a stream sauces. It is designed to distribute all the flavors evenly.

Vineyard says the device limits the intensity so that sauces won’t be drowned by flavor enhancers. Kraft Heinz Foods stocked the machine with jalapeño, buffalo, smoky chipotle and roasted garlic flavorings at a retail expo this week, but additional mix-ins are in the works, he said.

Vineyard stated that the machines are not only appealing to adventurous diners, but they can also reduce food waste for restaurants and minimise mess. Vineyard said that the Remix could also gather data about consumer preferences, and eventually identify local favorites to offer diners.
