Local authorities arrested Luigi Mangione Monday. Mangione allegedly had suppressors and gun, but also a fake New Jersey driver’s license that was similar to the ID used by the shooter when he checked into the hostel.
Mangione hasn't been charged in Thompson's death, authorities said Monday afternoon. NYPD officials said at a Monday press conference that officers would be traveling to Altoona, Pennsylvania to interview Mangioni.
They said authorities found a handwritten document that allegedly describes Mangione's "motivation and mindset."
"We don't think that there's any specific threats to other people mentioned in that document, but it does seem that he has some ill will toward corporate America," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said.
The NYPD reported that Thompson, who was walking towards a Manhattan Hotel where UnitedHealth Group, parent company of the insurance firm, was hosting an investor’s conference on December 4, was shot both in the leg and the back. Police said that the shooter fled, then biked to Central Park, and left, sparking a manhunt.
Thompson, who is 50 years old and from Minnesota, joined UnitedHealth in 2004, becoming CEO of the insurance division by April 2021.
Since the shooting, shares of UnitedHealth Group (a Dow component) are down about 6%. In Monday’s trading, they were 2% higher.
