The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review next month the petition of TikTok users and its Chinese parent ByteDance to overturn a law that mandates it be sold in China by ByteDance to remain in operation in this country.
The court instructed TikTok to file its opening briefs electronically by December 27 and that the Justice Department submit their reply briefs no later than January 3. The high court held off on ruling until the oral arguments were completed. These are now set for January 10.
Social media website ByteDance appealed the ruling to the Supreme Court, after an inferior court in Washington, D.C., had upheld the prohibition. The ban is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 19, unless ByteDance sells off the popular site. This decision was made on December 6, and the panel of three judges agreed with government officials that TikTok poses a possible threat to the national security.
U.S. government officials accuse TikTok being used to collect information on Americans by the Chinese Government. The company disputes that and claims that banning TikTok would violate the First Amendment’s right to freedom speech.
