What you need to know
- Amazon Haul has a wide range of clothing, accessories, cookware and home improvement products for as little as $20.
- This platform is limited in its ability to provide product or consumer feedback.
- Amazon Haul is designed for customers who are more concerned with cost savings than speedy shipping.
Amazon (AMZN), through its discount platform Haul, appears to have embraced impulse buying.
Haul launched in Amazon's shopping apps last week, showcasing items that cost $20 or less—what it called "crazy low prices" in its announcement—and select details about these deals.
Investopedia has checked out the mobile-only service; here are a couple of things that we found.
Cheap does not always mean the cheapest
Haul is a great place to find inexpensive clothing, accessories, cookware and home improvement products. Some recent examples include sneakers for $9.98 and a bento lunchbox that includes utensils.
Amazon.com has some items for less. A sprayer with double the capacity sold for only $2.95 at Amazon. A package of four produce containers—designed to keep cut onion, avocado, or lemon fresh—went for $11.99 on Haul, but a similar set could be found for $4.88 on Amazon.
Don't Expect To See Staples
Haul seems to be more of a place for fun, rather than essentials. The platform doesn't sell toothpaste, though toothbrush holders are available, as well as tools that squeeze toothpaste out of tubes.
Haul sells toilet paper dispensers, covers, trays and trays but not the actual tissue. It also doesn't appear to sell deodorant or soaps, although Haul offers soap dispensers and trays, in addition to molds and packaging strips for those making soap.
Emojis Replace Star Ratings
Emojis are used as a shortcut for the feedback that we see in Amazon’s star ratings and customer reviews.
Hearts denote best sellers, while rockets indicate items that are selling fast. The sections about the materials and where an item was manufactured usually do not exceed two dozen words.
Amazon said reviews and a star rating are shown on eligible products' detail page. But this consumer feedback isn't currently available for most items.
Come for the Prices, not Speed
Amazon will probably offer faster and possibly cheaper shipping.
Haul products are delivered directly by manufacturers. Many of these appear to be located within China. Amazon warned that they may take a few weeks to arrive. The retailer stated that shipping costs $3.99 but are waived on orders over $25. Amazon has said that it created the platform with people in mind who are more concerned about cost savings than convenience.
“Sometimes they would love to shop ultra-low-priced products even if some of them take one to two weeks to arrive,” Amazon announced in an announcement that it will be launching a new product. “We are just getting started with Amazon Haul and look forward to hearing from customers as we continue to innovate on and further improve the shopping experience.”
Two other wrinkles shoppers should note: Amazon still offers free returns for Haul items, but only within a 15-day window; and items marked "Final Sale" aren't returnable or refundable.
