What you need to know

  • On Wednesday the markets are closed for Christmas.
  • The stock market closes at noon on Christmas Eve. ET, and the bond market closes at 2 pm.
  • Investors can also expect to receive information on the consumer confidence index, home sales figures, and first jobless claims.

The markets will operate on shorter hours over the week of Christmas, including a Wednesday holiday and reduced trading hours for Christmas Eve.

Investors will pay attention to reports on consumer sentiment, new home sales and durable goods orders. They’ll also be interested in international trade, retail inventories, the initial claims of unemployment, and the first shipment of durable goods. Only a few earnings reports have been scheduled.

Christmas Holiday Shortens Trading Week

The holiday week will be shorter, which means fewer opportunities for investors to trade. On Wednesday, the markets are closed to celebrate Christmas. The stock market will close Tuesday at noon. ET and the end of trading on bond markets is at 2 p.m. 

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index will be published on Monday, despite the short week. This survey is a labor-sensitive one. As consumers reported recently feeling better about their economy following the recent election. Federal Reserve officials closely monitor consumer inflation expectations. This could become more important after December 18, the date when the Federal Reserve decided to cut its forecast for interest rates. 

Investors will receive Census Bureau data about new home sales on Tuesday. On Tuesday, investors will get Census Bureau data on durable goods orders and new home sales. Durable Goods Orders Report will reveal the state of manufacturing in the United States.

Fed officials had been closely monitoring the upward trend of unemployment. The initial claims data for jobless benefits on Thursday reflects this. Investors will be able to see the inventory levels of retailers and wholesalers on Friday. This can give them an idea about whether sellers are anticipating increased sales. 

While earnings reports are limited during the holiday week, New York-based pharmaceutical company  Anavex Life Sciences will issue its quarterly financials on Monday.
